The American Osteopathic Association
Headquartered in Chicago, the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) is a member association representing more than 67,000 osteopathic physicians (DOs). The AOA works to promote public health; encourages scientific research; serves as the primary certifying body for DOs; is the accrediting agency for osteopathic medical colleges; and has federal authority to accredit hospitals and other health care facilities.
The American Osteopathic Association constantly strives to be the premier home of all DOs and osteopathic medical students. The AOA advocates its philosophy so that osteopathic principles will be at the forefront of worldwide efforts to provide quality health care.
The AOA stands for the following universal principles:
- Ensuring the quality and continuum of osteopathic medical education and research.
- Enhancing the value of AOA membership.
- Protecting and promoting the rights of all osteopathic physicians.
- Accentuating the distinctiveness of osteopathic principles and the diversity of the profession.
- Supporting DOs’ efforts to provide quality, cost-effective health care to all Americans.
- Collaborating with other entities to advance osteopathic medicine.
